Better Buildings Initiative Expanding to Increase Efficiency of U.S. Laboratories

Washington, DC., Sept. 27, 2016 – As part of the Obama Administration’s effort to cut energy waste in the nation’s buildings and facilities, today the U.S. Department of Energy is launching the Better Buildings Smart Labs Accelerator to advance energy efficiency in laboratory buildings owned and operated by universities, corporations, national laboratories, hospitals, and federal agencies. Through the new Better Buildings Smart Labs Accelerator, partners will pursue ambitious energy-saving targets and strategies that will address key barriers to improving energy efficiency.

A typical laboratory is nearly four times more energy intensive than an average commercial building and can account for up to 70% of a given campus’ energy footprint. It’s estimated that if all laboratory buildings improved their energy efficiency by 20%, annual energy and cost savings could reach about 40 trillion British Thermal Units or $1 billion. EPA Proposes Use of Climate-Friendly Alternatives to HFCs Action supports Climate Action Plan by reducing greenhouse gas emissionsWASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to expand the list of acceptable substitutes and prohibit the use of certain chemicals in the U.S. that significantly contribute to climate change where safer, more climate-friendly alternatives exist. This is another step forward in a series under President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a class of potent greenhouse gases that can be up to 10,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide and are used in air-conditioning, refrigeration, and other equipment. The emissions avoided from this proposed rule are estimated to be up to 11 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030, which is equal to the emissions from the energy used by approximately one million homes for one year. First Gorgon LNG shipment heads to Japan

SAN RAMON, California – (Offshore staffChevron Corp. says its first shipment of LNG from the Gorgon Project has departed Barrow Island offshore Western Australia.

The LNG cargo will be delivered by the Asia Excellence to Chubu Electric Power for delivery into Japan.

The Gorgon Project is supplied from the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields, located within the Greater Gorgon area, between 80 mi (130 km) and 136 mi (220 km) off the northwest coast of Western Australia. It includes a 15.6 mtpa LNG plant on Barrow Island, a carbon dioxide injection project, and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to supply 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia. Environmentalist groups question Duke Energy natural gas plants

Environmentalist groups question Duke Energy natural gas plantsASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) December 23, 2015 -Two environmental groups want to take part in hearings on whether Duke Energy needs to build three natural gas-fired plants in western North Carolina.

The Southern Environmental Law Center said Tuesday it’s filed paperwork on behalf of MountainTrue and the Sierra Club to take part in hearings before the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
