Peru Planning to Construct 20 Hydropower Plants in the Amazon RegionConcerns about flooding and pollution did not dissuade the government of Peru from constructing more than 20 hydropower plants on the main stem of the Marañón River. Marañón River is one of the most important water sources in Peru and the main tributary of the Amazon River.

Most noteworthy dams for the Maranon are called Chadin 2 and the Veracruz. These two dams are expected to generate 2600 MW and 730 MW respectively. Managing Chadin 2 is AC Energia, a subsidiary company of Brazil’s Odebrecht Group.

Although, it is still in the consultation process, the construction of these dams was presented as one of Peru’s national interest making it a top priority.
